Maintaining a healthy diet during pregnancy – is there a need to “eat for two”?

Having a healthy diet is important throughout life, however it is especially important when growing a baby! Here are some tips to help prepare new mothers for what to eat during pregnancy for a healthy body and baby.

It is vital to eat a wide range of fruit and vegetables in order to get lots of vitamins and minerals. They also contain high amounts of fibre which can aid digestion. Make sure to wash your fruits and veggies carefully first.

Carbohydrates (starchy foods) are going to be an important source of energy and can fill you up without adding too many calories. These include bread, pasta, potatoes, cereals and rice. Try to choose wholemeal rather than white.

Protein should be eaten everyday, such as lean meat, fish, poultry, eggs and beans. Shark, swordfish and marlin should be avoided. It is also advisable to limit tuna to no more than 2 steaks or 4 tins each week – it contains more mercury than other types of fish.
