Dentistry is a naturally caring profession where your job is to look after people and an important aspect of their health – their teeth, mouth, gums and general oral health. If you have been a dentist for a long time, you may find that you operate on auto pilot sometimes – this is something we all do when we know our jobs inside out. It is very important to take a step back and remember that each and every patient is an individual, and that they will have different needs. Some people are incredibly scared of going to the dentist and if you take the time to listen to them and their concerns, you will instantly be making this experience less worrying for them. Be considerate with nervous patients so that they don’t feel like they are being rushed. It may also be useful to discuss sedation options with them so that they can feel better about their treatment.
