Taking vitamin supplements – can there be too much of a good thing?

To many people, taking a daily multi vitamin supplement helps them get the right balance of nutrients. Can there be too much of a good thing?

Firstly, we need to be clear about which vitamins are needed each day. Vitamin A is needed for healthy skin abd growth. Vitamin B is also needed for healthy skin and also to provide energy. B12 is required for healthy red blood cells. Vitamin C provides protection for the cells and for absorbing iron. Vitamin D is needed for strong teeth and bones.

It is possible to have too much of some of these vitamins: too much vitamin A can be very dangerous, with some symptoms including stomach pains, diarrhoea and in some extreme cases, hair loss and skin problems. Vitamin C overdose, however, is easily dealt with by the body – any excess is transported out through the urinary system and through sweat.

As a general rule, taking a multi vitamin is a good idea to supplement a healthy diet, however, if you are consuming a variety of foods, you should be getting enough of each vitamin naturally.
